IDF's contribution to the preservation of Indonesian social forestry is exemplified by its establishment of a collaboration with the Association of Indonesian Social Forestry Communities (PERMAPSI). PERMAPSI is an independent, integrated institution dedicated to ensuring the existence and continuity of social forestry.

This collaboration scenario is aligned with the shared vision and mission of both organizations, which include:

  • Empowering the community through economic development programs that encourage their active participation in social forestry, fostering the creation of added value and contributing to economic growth.
  • Promoting equal distribution of opportunities for decent work, particularly within groups, in tandem with the provision of high-quality public services.

The social forestry project tackles the interconnected challenges of poverty, forest loss, and environmental degradation in Indonesia, with a particular focus on four targeted provinces: West Papua, West Kalimantan, West Nusa Tenggara, and Bali. The project will be implemented in four stages outlined below:

Stage 1: Researching the impact of forest exploitation, deforestation, and forest degradation on carbon footprint and food security.

Stage 2: Securing land rights and building capacities for the targeted communities through the Indonesian Social Forestry mechanism. IDF will collaborate with local government partners and consortium members possessing extensive technical expertise to facilitate the official registration and monitoring of sustainable management practices across the 700,000 hectares of community forest as part of the social forestry initiative.

Stage 3: Enhancing livelihoods and developing robust supply chains. The project will address various issues, including improving small farmers' knowledge and promoting climate-smart farming practices, utilizing high-yield planting material, implementing appropriate farming techniques, and facilitating farmers' access to inclusive and effective supply chains. The objective is to establish viable business models for the farmers involved.

Stage 4: Promoting learning and institutional embedding. Recognizing the complexities of the institutional environment, the project will support forest and climate-related stakeholders in establishing an effective platform for knowledge exchange, learning, conflict resolution, and accessing innovative financing opportunities for sustainable forest management.
